Help give someone else a story?

Jeanne Deibert knew as soon as she saw the ultrasound.

It didn’t matter that the doctor told her that what looked on the screen like pockets in her son’s brain would likely disappear as he got closer to birth. That things were probably fine. That she shouldn’t worry too much about her baby.

She was his mother. And she felt certain that something was wrong.

As her pregnancy progressed throughout the winter of 2005, other tests raised more red flags until finally the phone rang one afternoon as she stood in the yard of her Seattle home. On the other end was a geneticist, confirming the results of her amniocentesis: the baby had Trisomy 18.

So many women face such a visit. What usually begins as a routine ultrasound full of innocence and anticipation quickly turns into a meeting with a stranger doctor where only one word of many is clearly understood: fatal. (You can read the rest of Jeanne’s story here.)

I know this is. So. Hard. No matter what you’ve lost or gained before. No matter what your story; where you’ve come from. This is difficult to the extreme.

And I’m oh so thankful for what I had in Tammy, and her non profit, Perinatal Comfort Care. Because of her, other groups like hers are beginning to spring up around the country, and hospitals and psychologists and OB’s are beginning to take notice. The emotional stability of women who choose to carry their babies to term after a fatal proven diagnosis are generally much better than those who don’t. Tammy made this an easier choice for us.

Kyle’s birth was beautiful. In so many ways. And Tammy took care of so many of those details so that it could be.

Now, after, we are working together to share Kyle’s story to so many others who have direct access to these hurting families. The doctors, nurses, ultrasound techs that meet them are slowly becoming aware of what a unique gift it is to carry a life. No matter what the prognosis. And they can now have access to tools they can share with these families who choose to continue that life.
